What is oilcloth?

Oilcloth is a versatile fabric, usually cotton or linen, which has been treated on one side to give it a waterproof finish. Traditionally that treatment might have been linseed oil but these days it tends to be PVC. Don’t be mistaken however, PVC fabric is not oilcloth. PVC fabric doesn’t contain cotton so is much less flexible and easy to use.

Oilcloth became popular in the 19th century as a floor covering where it was loved for its hard wearing and easy to maintain qualities. It became popular in the 1950s as an easy clean alternative to the traditional tablecloths. As a result, it’s popular with people who love retro interior design. It can also be used as a cheaper alternative to leather when making shoes or bags.

Before its domestic use, it was used by sailors and fishermen to create sails for their boats. If it can withstand anything the ocean can throw at it, then a children’s party should be a doddle!

Why is oilcloth such a great choice?

The fabric is stain and water resistant as well as antibacterial. It has a high density which makes it durable and strong. They’re easy to wipe clean and store. If it’s folded and now has creases, then it’s easy to remove. Oilcloth softens and becomes more pliable as it warms up so lay out the cloth flat in a warm room and the creases will disappear. Being so resilient they can be used again and again for many years. The number of designs now available is vast.

It’s no longer the case that you have to choose between plain colours and a limited range of floral designs.
